Planting a garden shares nutrition, hope with orphans

July 25, 2012

By Lunga Masuku, 21 July 2012, Swazi Weekend Observer

Emmanuel Khayalethu, an orphanage under the Ekupheleni Chiefdom, this week got a surprise visit when foreign students came to the centre.

The students are from the Taipei Medical University. About 15 Taiwanese students came all the way from Taiwan to give hope to young abandoned children, who have found comfort at Emmanuel Khayalethu.

A visit to the orphanage by the Swazi Observer news team found the Taiwanese busy clearing a piece of land for a vegetable garden to cater for the needs of the children.

One of the students, who preferred to be called Howard said the purpose of their visit was because they wanted to give love to the children since they know the plight faced by abandoned children.

He said they would be in Swaziland for the next three weeks and would return to their home country after August 20. “We are all university students. Some of us are doing medicine, nursing and other health related studies.

“Our visit to the orphanage will help us appreciate the challenges faced by African children. We were well received by the children and they were very happy to associate with us. Next time we come to Swaziland we will buy them toys so that we can cement the relationship we have established. They may not be able to speak English with us but we are able to communicate with them through signs. A majority of us are able to exchange greetings in Siswati and we are determined to learn the language so that when we come back to your country we visit the orphanage to assess their development,” said Howard.

The Taiwanese were divided into two groups. There were those who cleared the garden while others dedicated their time to playing with children. Howard said their plan was to spend the whole of Thursday at the orphanage and leave later in the day. He said they were booked in Mbabane and would be visiting other areas in the country so that they could return to Taiwan with a clear picture on how to help Swazi children.

Emmanuel Khayalethu is home to 52 children that were abandoned by their parents in the country’s hospitals. A majority of them were allegedly found dumped by their parents at the RFM in Manzini and at the Good Sheperd hospital in Siteki. Nomsa Masuku, one of the secretaries at the orphanage said the youngest was a nine-month-old baby boy.

She said some of the children were brought by police, who allege that some of the children have to be taken away from their parents because they were victims of abuse. Masuku said the orphanage currently had close to 40 children in their primary school. She said the school was from Grade One to Five and they were looking at building more classrooms so as to accomodate more learners.

“We have run short of funds and would like to build three classes and a staffroom so that the ministry of education can give us a licence to host Standard Five exams. We would like to have a fully-fledged school so we can be recognised by the government,” said Masuku.

She said the orphanage was the brainchild of Lewis Nxumalo, a former employee of Tibiyo TakaNgwane and his wife Hixonia.A Swazi Observer social club (SISONKHE) donated two pair of shoes. Lucky Mamba, the chairman said his social club would in future donate o the orphanage. “We appeal to companies to come to the rescue of the needy children. We are hopeful that other companies will assist the centre,” said Mamba.
