2017 SHAB SHAB Project

First Aid Kit and Health Education Manual

★Background:

Based on our previous service experience, we found that Swaziland people living in remote areas don’t have the habit of wearing shoes. Also, their working environments are hazardous. Therefore, the locals may rub their feet and legs while walking and laboring on a rocky road. Moreover, there are few medical resources in these places, and the doctors and hospitals are even rare. For these reasons, usually, people won’t get proper treatment after wounding. This can worsen the injury and increase the possibility of getting infectious diseases.

★Objectives:

  1. To let the locals have further knowledge about injury treatment and diseases.

  2. To decrease infectious diseases transmitted by wounds.

  3. To help the locals and Taiwanese volunteer medical team.

★Scope:

The “First Aid Kit Project” attained great achievements during the last three years. We finally collected 400 and 500 first aid kit bags in 2015 and 2016 respectively. This year, we want to collect 500 to 600 bags. There will be saline, antiseptic, salve, cotton swabs, adhesive taps, and gauzes in a first aid kit.

Also, we will write a user instruction paper (translated to Siswati) and design a series of health education. People can get the instruction paper and watch our demonstration so that they will know more about wound treatment.

Relief Low Back and Neck Pain for Swazis

★Background:

Since 1990, low back and neck pain has been ranked No.2 in the ‘Leading causes of Years Lived with Disability’ in Swaziland for more than 15 years. This affects not only the health of the Swazis, but also their working performance, bringing lots of inconvenience to their everyday lives.

★Objectives:

We aimed to relief the low back and neck pain for Swazis by holding workshops to let the Swazis to get to know about some of the simple do-it-yourself physical therapy to sooth and prevent their pain, thus, lowering down the number of people seeking for medical treatment due to the pain.

★Content:

The workshop includes both demonstration and relevant health education:

  1. Stretching exercise

  2. Chinese acupuncture points massage

  3. Demonstration of correct posture

  4. Providing relevant health care advice (ex. Food to be avoided, situations that are not suitable for massage, etc.)

★Scope:

This plan was successfully carried out in Swaziland in 2016, and positive feedback was received from those who had tried. Therefore, this year we plan to continue the plan with improvements. We also aim to collect 30 to 40 hot-water bags (as shown below) for massage and demonstration, and 20 pieces of towels for stretching exercise. Handbooks about the workshop will be given to some of the organizations, people can get more information from the handbooks as there will be pictures and detail descriptions for their reference.
